Long-lived perennial native with sunflower-like yellow flowers, blooming May to August. Occurs on well-drained soils of dry to wet meadows, rocky slopes, sagebrush scrub and forest openings, sometimes in large dense patches; 3,000 to 10,000 ft. elevation. Leaves are unpalatable to ungulates.
