The Intermountain West planting region refers to the diverse and vast area between the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada, spanning parts of the western United States. This region includes Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Wyoming. The landscape is characterized by a mix of mountain ranges, high desert plateaus, valleys, and basins, with elevations ranging from 2,000 to over 14,000 feet. The climate is typically arid to semi-arid, with cold winters, hot summers, and limited rainfall, often averaging between 8-12 inches annually.

In this region, native plant species are adapted to dry conditions, with plants such as sagebrush, bunchgrasses, and saltbrush thriving in the desert areas, while higher elevations support grasses, wildflowers, and shrubs suited for more temperate conditions. Regionally adapted seed mixes are essential here, as they are selected to withstand extremes in temperature, water scarcity, and the challenges of high elevation soils. These plants often have deep root systems to access groundwater, drought-resistant properties, and a natural tolerance to local pests and diseases.
