Elymus virginicus

Virginia Wildrye is a native, cool-season, perennial bunchgrass native to much of the eastern two thirds of the United States. Commonly found in moist in mesic to wet soils, it is an important specie in wetlands and riparian ecosystems.

Mature height of 2-3 feet
Reproduces by tillering and seed
Prefers moist soils, high soil fertility, heavier soil textures
Adapts to full sun to full shade
Often found scattered on shaded banks, along fencerows and in open woodlands
Excellent seeding vigor and fast establishment
Very good palatability
Readily eaten by all classes of livestock and wildlife
Can be used in range restoration as a cool-season grass, and in native range seed mixes
Can be used as a cool-season pasture grass in shaded, wooded, or riparian areas
Excellent forage producer with up to 3,000 pounds of dry matter per acre
Once established, graze on a rotational basis throughout the cool season
Can be grown dry land or with irrigation
