With its bright red flowers, notably marked with a black blot at the base of the petals, corn poppy blooms prolifically from May-July. A heavy seed producing annual, it will readily reseed itself and once established it will need little maintenance. It grows well in full sun and can be found in disturbed areas of upland/grassland areas. During WW2, corn poppy was noted to grow in the disturbed tire tracks and trenches of the many battlefields of Europe. Before roundup ready agriculture, corn poppy was seen in abundance across the country side where it was an extensive weed in production fields. Growing to a height of up to 1-3 feet, it competes well with short species. Late fall or early spring, shallow seeding will produce stands the following growing season.
