New Mexico saltbush

Atriplex obovata

Drought resistant subshrub less than 2 ft. tall with silvery obovate deciduous leaves and yellow flowers, blooming June to October. Occurs in fine to sandy soils and alkaline conditions in saline flats of salt desert shrub and lower pinyon-juniper communities; 2,000 to 7,000 ft. elevation. Widespread in Arizona, New Mexico and Mexico. Browsed by wildlife and very succulent in the spring. Rapid regrowth when browsed. Useful for stabilizing disturbed sites.
