White Wild Indigo is a long lived perennial member of the pea family. Its white, pea-type flowers are in bloom from May-July. Found growing in prairies and open woodlands, it prefers full sun and moist well drained soils. However, it tolerates dry and infertile soils due to its large taproot and its nitrogen fixating abilities. As with the other indigos, it is slow to establish at first and will not reach blooming heights of 3 to 5 feet for several years. This plant contains toxic alkaloids that can be fatal to cattle if ingested in high quantities.
