Showy goldenrod is a native perennial found throughout the eastern half of the United States in mesic to dry upland prairies and open woodlands where it can receive full sun to light shade. As its name implies, the inflorescence is a very showy panicle that produces numerous bright yellow flowers when in bloom from August-October. As with most goldenrods, this species also spreads through seeds and rhizomatous roots allowing it to form dense colonies, especially in disturbed soils. It is an important nectar source for late season butterflies, bees and other insects. Shallow seeding into a firm seed bed in late fall or early spring should produce a good stand.
