Reaching a mature height of 2–4 feet with a stout, upright bunching growth habit, it features flat, broad, hairy green leaves and produces large, open, nodding seed panicles with flattened spikelets. It thrives in well-drained loamy to sandy soils in open woods, grasslands, and disturbed slopes and is ideal for rapid erosion control, forest burn restoration, and livestock pasture.
